Guided Reading in Term 2

Guided Reading is a teaching methodology aimed at providing small-group reading instruction. For the past 6 weeks Scoil Mhuire has used this initiative to help teach reading in our classrooms. A Guided Reading approach begins with the use of a picture book as a way to introduce a comprehension strategy (a tool to help us understand what we are reading). For pupils, a Guided Reading lesson means reading, talking, writing and drawing about the book they are reading. Pupils work in small groups, each group reading a different fiction or non-fiction book. If working with a teacher, pupils will discuss the book and practice using a comprehension strategy. If working independently pupils will read and then complete a task based on an interesting or puzzling part of their book: making predictions, illustrating images, making connections and creating questions.

A scheme like this requires great financial investment - almost 450 books were purchased in order to help this initiative to get up and running! A sincere thank you to the Parents Council , through the Board of Management, for their kind donation to help our Guided Reading project. We hope pupils will continue to enjoy and benefit from this scheme in the years ahead.
